Three Wheeled Buggies

Whether you're looking for a buggy run with or just a stroller that can be used for neighbourhood walks, three wheeled buggies offer great mobility. Their compact design makes them easy to manoeuvre even in tight spaces.

For a smooth ride, go for a pram with air-filled tyres and look for models with an swivel wheel that rotates 360 degrees in front. They are, however, susceptible to punctures. Make sure you have an emergency repair kit.

Sturdy frame

The latest figures have been released that show that the three-wheeled buggie - that noughties symbol of more money than sense - is in steep decline. They are being replaced by four-wheelers which can handle a wider variety of terrain, yet still look swanky and being easy to push.

The larger the wheels are, the more your buggy will be able to deal with bumpy surfaces and uneven pavements. With larger wheels front and back also makes it easier to maneuver and more stable when walking downhill or over difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tried the buggy with a newborn as well as a best 3 wheel buggy year old and found it was able to handle grass, cobbles rough roads, dirt tracks and kerbs. She noted that it was solid to push, and very solid on difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable, so require periodic pumping) come with suspension built-in that was very comfortable for my children.

Another thing to think about is the seat size and shape. It should be large enough for your child's comfort and you will also require it to recline so that they can lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of lying flat, which lets your child face you, whereas others only allow a face-to-parent one.

The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road or wet walks. This buggy is ideal for a single child from birth and can be adjusted to accommodate two children as your family grows. It is suitable for babies and toddlers until age 4 and comes with a bumper bar, raincover, a better 5-point harness and large cushioned seat unit. The storage options are good as well, with a large basket, zip pockets in the hood, and a handy pouch on the back of the seat unit.

Wheels with larger diameter

Larger wheels give your buggy more stability while driving over rough terrain. This is perfect for buggies that are off-road. They also help you maneuver the pushchair in tight spaces. Certain three-wheeled buggies have wheels that swivel on the front to assist you in navigating tight corners. Others are designed to run and have fixed wheels that lock to provide increased speed and stability. This is also useful if you crash into the kerb or a tree. The front wheel will be lifted slightly to avoid hitting it.

Many 3 wheeled pushchairs have air-filled tyres that allow them to tackle a broad range of terrains. They are also more flexible than 4 wheelers. They also tend to be lighter. However, they are prone to punctures and you'll need to keep a repair kit, spare inner tube, and pump on hand.

These buggies, as per MFM's Kath, have larger wheels that, she says "perform well on grass, gravel roads and market town cobbles", and can easily go up or down kerbs. The buggies also come with a suspension that according to Kath "smooths out bumps very effectively".

The downside of having larger wheels is that they make buggies quite large and make it difficult to get through narrow spaces. This is a problem if you use it for jogging or you need to get through doorways that are narrow when out and about. Many models have compact folding options that let you remove the front wheels and store them in a more compact manner.

Easy to Manoeuvre

One of the major advantages of a three-wheel buggy is that it can be much easier to maneuver especially with a child in tow. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels turn on a dime, and are easy to move, making them ideal for terrains that are difficult, such as parks, cobblestones, bumpy roads, and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tested a 3 wheeler with her toddler and newborn and wrote: "The Terrain was a delight to maneuver on the ground and the swivel front wheel being especially helpful. I was also awed by how well it dealt with bumps, particularly when using the hand-operated brake. It was very stable in the downhills or on uneven terrain."

The only drawback to this great maneuverability is that the 3 wheel buggy's larger wheels do sometimes mean that it can be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces - something to keep in mind if you live in a urban area. If this is the case then a 4-wheeled buggy could be the better choice for you.
